Glossary: Key Terms

Vignette
A vignette is a toll charge levied for the use of motorways and expressways in Austria. Since 2023, it is exclusively digital – i.e. as a number plate registration in the ASFINAG system.
ASFINAG
The Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft (ASFINAG) is the state-owned company that operates the Austrian motorway and expressway network and collects toll charges.
Digital Vignette
Since 1 January 2023, the digital vignette is the only form of Austrian vignette. It is registered as a number plate in the ASFINAG system and automatically checked at controls.
BStMG
The Federal Road Toll Act 2002 (BStMG) is the legal basis for the vignette requirement in Austria. It regulates the toll obligation, exceptions and penalties.
Special Toll
Certain routes in Austria require an additional special toll in addition to the vignette. These include tunnels such as the Arlberg Tunnel and mountain roads such as the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.
GO Toll
The GO toll is the distance-based toll system for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes in Austria. It differs from the vignette and is billed separately.
Substitute Toll
The substitute toll is a reduced penalty that can be paid when stopped on the motorway without a valid vignette. It amounts to EUR 120 and must be paid immediately.

Questions & Answers

Do I need to buy the vignette before travelling?

Yes, you must purchase the vignette before entering toll motorways or expressways. There is no way to purchase the vignette retrospectively once you are already on the motorway.

How long does registration of the digital vignette take?

Registration usually takes place immediately after purchase. In rare cases it may take up to 15-30 minutes. We recommend purchasing the vignette at least one hour before travelling.

Can I purchase a vignette for a foreign vehicle?

Yes, foreign vehicles can and must purchase the Austrian vignette if they travel on toll routes. The vignette is registered to the foreign number plate.

What happens at a check without a valid vignette?

At a check without a valid vignette, you will be asked to pay a substitute toll of EUR 200 immediately. If you cannot or will not pay, administrative penalty proceedings will be initiated, which can lead to a fine of up to EUR 3,000 (previously EUR 120 substitute toll).

Does the vignette also apply to electric vehicles?

Yes, electric vehicles are subject to the same vignette requirements as conventional vehicles. There is no exemption for electric vehicles from the vignette requirement.

Can I buy a vignette for multiple vehicles?

No, each vignette only applies to one specific vehicle, identified by its number plate. A separate vignette must be purchased for each vehicle.

What is the difference between a motorway and an expressway?

Motorways (A-roads) are multi-lane long-distance roads with structural separation of traffic directions. Expressways (S-roads) are similar but may have simpler designs. Both require a vignette.

Is it possible to cancel the vignette?

No, vignettes once purchased cannot generally be cancelled or returned. Exceptions apply only in very special cases such as vehicle theft or serious technical errors during purchase.

How can I check if my vignette is valid?

You can check the validity of your vignette on the ASFINAG website (asfinag.at) under 'Vignette query'. Enter your number plate to check.

What applies to motorhomes?

Motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes permissible gross weight need a standard car vignette. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are subject to the GO toll and do not need a vignette.

Can I transfer the vignette to another vehicle?

No, a vignette cannot be transferred to another vehicle. It is tied to the specific number plate. When changing the number plate of the same vehicle, a free transfer is possible.

What should I consider when buying a vehicle?

If you buy a vehicle and the number plate changes, you must purchase a new vignette or have the existing vignette transferred to the new number plate (free of charge at ASFINAG).
